Blossoms and butterflies for Isabella

/

November 29, 2010

/ helena

This cake was created for a little girl’s christening. It brought together various elements of other designs I’ve done in the past. It features the Sweet Tiers signature blossoms and a cascade of hand painted butterflies, finished off with a sugar bow.

Sophie la Girafe

Until I received the request to create this 1st birthday cake, I’d never heard of Sophie la Girafe. Yes, very uncultured of me. Apparently she is vintage…Sophie the Giraffe has been around for more than 49 years…
Since 1961, more than 30 million Sophies have been sold in the world. Geez! Have I been under a rock or something???

Sophie was sculpted, in one piece, from a 12″ square chocolate mud cake. Carved, ganached, covered in fondant with hand painted details. The birthday girl, upon seeing her, exclaimed “OOOHHHHH!” I think she liked it!

These cakes were created for twins celebrating their first birthday. These were designed around the invitations which featured these colour schemes.

The figurines came about as their mum liked the little china doll figurine I had done so I adapted the same look for a little pirate and another take on the China Girl Doll.

It wasn’t until I’d completed the pirate that I realised he doesn’t have any pants on!!!! Ha ha ha ha!
He’s obviously just hopped out of bed and thrown on a jacket over a long nightshirt, ready for battle!

Ava’s Christening Cake

From start to finish this job was an absolute pleasure … my client liked what I had done with the China Doll, so I adapted the flowers to suit a pink christening cake for a gorgeous little girl. This design was based on a beautiful invitation which featured birds and a featured hand written message on the front.

The dove was made from modelling paste. I didn’t quite know what to expect with the figurine as I haven’t made anything as large as this for a topper. I made it well ahead of time so it had plenty of time to dry. I did have visions of wings falling off but tried to push them out of my mind!!

Chocolate fudge cake soaked in Contreau syrup and filled with a luxury chocolate ganache was the basis for this little number…

My dear friend Georgia christened her youngest and I wanted to create something soft and pretty, just like scrumptious little Ellie! Hand sculpted flowers and a full sugar bow finish off this design.

The teddy has a styrofoam core – her limbs and clothes are made from sugar. The trickiest part about dressing her was , believe it or not, the bow on her head! It was teeny beeny!
