The Owl and the Pussycat

OP1aMy husband and I had the honour of being little Amelie’s godparents last weekend. I found some adorable hand made owls from Red Stitch Designs via madeit.com.au. Super cute yes?

So, of course, I wanted to incorporate an owl in the design of the cake for this special occasion. Amelie’s mum LOVES cats and asked if I could perhaps include a cat somewhere. So, I got to thinking…hmmmm… an owl and a cat, an owl and a cat…hmmm – of course! (slaps the forehead) The Owl and the Pussycat!

It’s always lovely to be asked ‘back’ to make another cake for a client… this cake was created for little Jesse’s first birthday. I recently made his Train christening cake and was excited to be part of his special birthday too..
This cake was designed around the invitations sourced from Australian company “Imprintables”.They have a gorgeous collection of stylish invitations for all occasions and this birthday invitation was no exception.

I was contacted to create a christening cake for a little boy… the brief was to use blue, white, keep it simple with a train on the top. So that’s what I did!

A 2 tier version of my princess pillow cake created for an adorable little girl’s 5th birthday.
The pillows were carved from chocolate mud cake, filled with Lindt chocolate ganache.
The crown is made from sugarpaste and airbrushed gold. All jewels are inedible… every girl needs a bit of bling!

I Love You This Much!

My in laws play a game with my daughter which we refer to as “Toso!” In Greek this means “This much!” One grandparent will ask, “How much do you love me?” and Julia will either reply “Toso!” or “Koukoutsi” – which means “A Pip” which she illustrates by pinching two little fingers together and laughing at the mock shocked expressions! This little competition between grandma and grandpa can go on all day… and usually does.

My brother Aris has a passion for competitive skeet shooting, hunting, cooking, his family and appreciates the bizarre. So, what to make for his 40th birthday cake? Maybe a present with stars bursting out of the top with an abundance of happiness…um, nope. How about a big 4-0… errr, nope.
Dead animal? Perfect!

China Doll

There is a gorgeous special occassion gift and bomboniere business in Melbourne called “Annabella Bomboniere” that has a fantastic selection of modern peices – not your usual crystal figurine kind of stuff. I designed this cake around one of the wooden china dolls they offer as a christening favour and owners Anna and Theo were kind enough to display it in their store…

She comes in all sorts of colours but I was particularly taken by the blue one and so created a cake around her. They loved it and I hope their clients love it too!

The flowers around the bottom tier are another version of the whimsical blossoms that feature on a few of my christening designs.. this time a little more sophisticated with pearl lustre dust giving them depth of colour and some stamens in the middle – just for something different!

Chocolate fudge cake soaked in Contreau syrup and filled with a luxury chocolate ganache was the basis for this little number…

My dear friend Georgia christened her youngest and I wanted to create something soft and pretty, just like scrumptious little Ellie! Hand sculpted flowers and a full sugar bow finish off this design.

The teddy has a styrofoam core – her limbs and clothes are made from sugar. The trickiest part about dressing her was , believe it or not, the bow on her head! It was teeny beeny!
